Maisäß season in May: Traditional hut hike in Montafon

Tips, Active

As enthusiastic regular visitors to Montafon, you are of course familiar with the characteristic little huts that you encounter on your hikes through the countryside around Bartholomäberg and beyond.

Since the name "Maisäss" comes from the month of May, now is probably the perfect time to introduce you to a very special Maisäss hike. This way, you can already start planning your next Fernblick stay. You will find these charming wooden huts on almost all trails in Montafon, but an exceptionally beautiful hike where you can discover a particularly large number of Maisäss starts right in St. Gallenkirchen.

From the picturesque town center, you hike through the "Schoder" area up to the Montiel Maisäss huts. In addition to the Maisäss, there is also a small chapel in this area that you can admire on your hike. The picturesque view of the Zamangspitze in the northwest will also amaze you. The hike continues towards "Netza Maisäss." Here, some of the typical small wooden huts are arranged to form a real "mountain village." The trail then turns towards Monigg, where you can also admire the Sasarscha Maisäße. After that, it descends into the valley to Gortipohl, a district of the municipality of St. Gallenkirchen, from where you can take the bus back to Bartholomäberg.

Experience history live

The Maisäss are inextricably linked to the history of the Montafon, as they were an important part of agriculture in the Montafon in earlier times. The animals spent several weeks here before being driven up to the Alps in summer. This stopover was also used for several weeks in autumn. This "three-stage agriculture" had the advantage that hay could be harvested more often in the valley, thus providing more feed for the winter. Nowadays, most Maisäss are used for tourist purposes or cherished by their owners as romantic second homes.

At Fernblick, you can also experience Maisäss culture in a very special way. We have converted our former Maisäss snack bar into our unique Maisäss outdoor sauna. Here and in the adjacent sauna garden, tradition and sauna enjoyment combine to create a unique experience.
