The Natural Spectacle of the Rhododendron Blossom in the Montafon. As spring slowly gives way to summer, a fascinating transformation takes place in the higher elevations of the Montafon. While lush greenery dominates the valley and the sun already provides pleasant warmth, high up in the mountains a very special natural treasure awakens from its winter slumber. Starting in mid-June, the alpine slopes transform into a glowing sea of pink and red blossoms: the alpine rose makes its grand entrance.

For us at Fernblick Montafon, this time of year is a magical moment anew every year. It is the time when nature unfolds its full power and shows us how beautiful it is to simply linger in the here and now and marvel.

An alpine wonder in brilliant red

The alpine rose belongs to the rhododendron family and is perfectly adapted to the harsh mountain climate. It defies wind and weather to unfold its full splendor for just a few weeks in early summer. Those who are out on the hiking trails of the Montafon during this time will, in places, walk through meter-wide, gently fragrant bands of flowers that form a beautiful contrast to the still snow-capped peaks of the Silvretta in the background.
 

Our insider tip for your personal floral experience: The red wonder at Lünersee

To experience the region’s most impressive sea of alpine roses, we recommend a trip in June to one of Vorarlberg’s most beautiful spots: Lake Lünersee. At this time of year, the breathtaking reservoir is just awakening from its winter slumber, and the shores and steep mountain slopes surrounding the deep-blue lake transform into an almost surreal landscape.

Here, at an altitude of over 1,900 meters, the alpine roses grow particularly lush. On a leisurely walk around the lake, you’ll hike through stretches of a dense, bright red carpet of flowers that contrasts perfectly with the turquoise-blue water of the lake and the light-colored limestone cliffs of the Rätikon. An unforgettable sight and an absolute paradise for photo opportunities, which you can easily reach via the Lünerseebahn.
