Packing list for your autumn wellness and walking holiday: What you mustn’t forget to pack!

Our Hotel, Active, Current news, Hiking, Tips

Outside, the woods around the Fernblick are turning vibrant shades of gold and red; the air is wonderfully crisp, and a gentle sea of mist often still hangs over the valley whilst the morning sun is already shining high above. Autumn in the Montafon is arguably the most impressive time of year for anyone wishing to combine sweeping mountain panoramas with deep relaxation.

To ensure you feel completely at ease both on mountain hikes in the fresh air and during long, relaxing sessions in the spa, having the right kit is essential. With our handy guide, you can pack smartly and easily, and be perfectly prepared for every moment of your break.

1. The secret of the mountains: the layering principle

Autumn days in the mountains often bring cool mornings and wonderfully mild, sunny afternoons. If you plan your outfit in layers, you’ll stay flexible and enjoy every step:

  • Base layer: Breathable technical shirts or lightweight merino base layers reliably wick away moisture and keep your skin comfortably dry.
  • Warm layer: A thin fleece jacket, a light woollen jumper or a lightweight down or insulated waistcoat provide cosy warmth, can be quickly unbuttoned if needed and weigh next to nothing in your rucksack.
  • Weather protection: A wind- and water-repellent technical jacket protects against the crisp mountain breeze on the ridges and sudden changes in the weather.
  • Hiking trousers: Sturdy, stretchy trekking trousers are ideal – preferably with a zip-off feature for warm, sunny afternoons.

2. Hiking kit: Safe and comfortable every step of the way

Whether it’s a leisurely panoramic walk or a more challenging summit trek – to ensure sure-footedness and comfort on autumnal woodland ground, these essentials belong in your rucksack:

  • Well-worn hiking boots: Ankle-high mountaineering or trekking boots with a grippy tread are indispensable in autumn, as damp leaves or shaded sections can be slippery.
  • Hiking socks: High-quality, padded socks (ideally made from a merino wool blend) prevent pressure points and blisters.
  • Telescopic hiking poles: These take the strain off your knees and joints on descents and provide stable support on uneven terrain.
  • Day rucksack: Enough space for a change of clothes, a water bottle, energy bars and sun cream. An integrated rain cover is an advantage.
  • Accessories for cooler spells: Thin gloves, a headband or a light cap protect your head and neck from the cold wind and the chill of the morning.
  • Sun protection: The mountain sun is still intense in autumn – so don’t forget your sunglasses, sun cream and lip balm with UV protection.

3. Wellness & Spa: Comfort for maximum deep relaxation

After your tour, it’s time for some warmth: a session in the sauna with a view of the peaks or floating weightlessly in warm water will help your tired muscles recover in no time. For the spa area, we recommend:

  • Swimwear: It’s best to pack two sets so that one can dry whilst you’re enjoying the pool. Although our sauna house is clothing-optional (from 4.00 pm), you’ll need swimwear to swim in the Skypool.
  • Something to read & a notebook: Finally, time for that book that’s been sitting on your bedside table for so long, or for jotting down a few personal thoughts whilst taking in the mountain panorama.
  • Moisturiser: Fresh mountain air and sauna sessions can take their toll on your skin. A rich face and body cream will nourish it with valuable nutrients. If you fancy trying something new, you’ll find high-quality skincare products from Vielö and Vinoble Cosmetics, as well as body lotion from Metzler Molke, in the bathrooms.
(Tip: Cosy bathrobes and wellness bags are already waiting for you in your room – bath slippers are available at reception!)

4. For the evening: Refined cosiness

As the day draws to a close and the kitchen beckons with delicious autumnal creations, it’s time for an atmosphere that’s both stylish and relaxed. A loose-fitting shirt, a smart cardigan or an autumnal dress are the perfect way to round off the day.

With this packing list, you’ll be perfectly prepared to enjoy the golden season to the full here with us: first, some active exercise in the fresh mountain air, then a cosy retreat into warmth and tranquillity. We look forward to welcoming you soon here at Fernblick!
