Montafon lore 5: On the trail of the smugglers

Tips, Active

A life that is almost unimaginable today. Daring men transported important foodstuffs from Switzerland to the Montafon and even as far as southern Germany over impassable paths. We follow the smugglers of the Montafon on their dangerous journey.

Flourishing trade in secret

For many centuries, trade between Switzerland and the Montafon flourished, but this business became illegal due to the state border that later ran through here. Smuggling was therefore a lucrative business in the Montafon. The smugglers transported the "hot goods" over the mountains in the "Kraxe", a wooden basket strapped to their backs. Unroasted coffee beans were particularly popular, as they could not be detected by the customs officers due to their almost non-existent smell. This is why the karst holes in the rock where the smuggled goods were hidden were often called coffee holes.

Important products

In addition to coffee, other foodstuffs such as flour, salt and sugar were also smuggled into the Montafon. Tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars were also particularly popular. Meanwhile, smugglers mainly brought animal products such as hides, butter and meat to Switzerland. The life of a smuggler was a dangerous one. If the customs officers caught the smugglers, the men faced heavy fines or up to five years in prison. Violent clashes between smugglers and customs officers can also be found in historical records.

Be a smuggler for a day

There is still a lot going on on the smugglers' trails today. You can now relive the journey of the daring men here. Hike over the St. Antönier Joch past Lake Gafier to the Gafierjoch. In this border area between the Montafon and Switzerland, there is even a circular hiking trail for families in "smuggler country". Starting from the Schafberg Hüsli restaurant in Gargellen, you can experience the life of a smuggler together with the mascot "Schmuggi-Luggi" at various stations. The stations "Schleichweg", "Auf der Flucht" or "Gäßscherm" (an old wooden hut) promise thrills.

Fortunately, you don't have to hide in uncomfortable crevices and dilapidated shelters after your smuggling adventure. Enjoy the comfort of the 21st century and relax in our wellness area after your exciting tour.
