Montafon lesson 6: The Gargellner windows

Active, Tips, Current news

In this edition of our Montafon guide, we want to introduce you to a special piece of nature. Around the mountain village of Gargellen, you will find unique geological rock formations that you can discover on a varied tour.

Rocks from times gone by

An exceptional geological phenomenon awaits you above the mountain village of Gargellen. Light-colored limestone rocks emerge here between the otherwise darker primary rock massif. In science, these rocks are referred to as "windows." Normally, these special rock layers are deep underground, but here they have been exposed over the past millennia by erosion and movements of the rock massif. This impressive natural phenomenon is therefore also the namesake for one of the most beautiful circular hiking trails in the Montafon. The "new" Gargellen windows offer impressive views and vistas that give you a new perspective on one of the oldest mountain villages in the Montafon.

Varied hike

The route starts and ends at the valley station of the Gargellen mountain railways. From here, you hike across the Gitzistee – and past the boulder of the same name – as well as the autumnal alpine landscape of Rüti up towards Ronggalpe. Along the way, in addition to the impressive geological rock formations, you will also see information boards providing details about the history of the village and its geological features. In recent years, "windows in the trees" have also been created, offering unobstructed views of the village of Gargellen and the impressive surrounding natural scenery. Hike back to your starting point at the Gargellen mountain railway via Alpe Rongg. During the approximately three-hour hike, you will experience the unique alpine and mountain pasture landscape of the Montafon up close.

Our reception team is familiar with more than just this beautiful tour through the Montafon. Our staff will be happy to give you tips on discovering your new favorite spot or take you on a varied hike. Enjoy autumn in the Montafon with all your senses!
