Checklist: How to get your bike ready for spring

Active, Tips, Current news

The snow has melted and the sun's strength is increasing daily. In such weather conditions, we are drawn to the outdoors, and mountain bike tours are particularly appealing at this time of year. Even if you can't be with us, you may want to get on your bike in your local area. And because your bike needs a service after spending the winter in the basement or garage, we have put together a short checklist for you here.

Wash away the winter

You should definitely start your bike service with a thorough wash. The best way to clean off the dust from the winter months is with soapy water. For particularly stubborn dirt, you can buy bike cleaner from specialist retailers, which you can apply with a sponge.

How do the brakes look?

Functioning brakes can save lives, so be precise here: check how worn your brake pads are. Do the brakes engage quickly or do you have to push the brake levers all the way to the handlebars? If you are unsure, it is best to take your bike to a professional, because safety always comes first.

Pay attention to the tires!

Your tires have most likely lost pressure over the long winter break. Therefore, be sure to check the pressure before you get on your bike. For mountain bikes, the optimal pressure is between three and four bar. If you ride a lot in the woods over rough terrain, two to three bar is often sufficient. When checking your tires, you should also pay attention to the tread. If they are worn or have small cracks, they should be replaced.

Oil please!

To keep your bike running smoothly, you need to lubricate it. Clean your bike chain and remove any rust, then lubricate it with sufficient chain oil. While this is soaking in, you can focus on the suspension elements and fork. Lubricate them with a silicone-free universal oil to protect them from corrosion.

Need a clear view?

To ensure you can see everything on your bike ride, your bike also needs adequate lighting. The following are mandatory: a white front headlight, a red rear light, reflective strips or yellow spoke reflectors, and pedal reflectors.

Extra tip:
stay away from high-pressure cleaners – the strong water pressure can damage important bike components. However, there is nothing wrong with hosing it down with a garden hose.

With our checklist, nothing stands in the way of your first ride. We hope you have fun and look forward to seeing you back on your bike tours in the Fernblick area of Montafon.
